Torture and death and blood on a tree-

A pitiful picture of inhumanity

He raised not a murmur nor defended His name

Submitted to sinners to die now in shame!

On a hill like a skull death claimed for its own

The ultimate victory- He died all alone

Even the thieves suffered less than the lamb

The spotless messiah now despised and damned!

But at Calvary more than Christ was dying

An unseen battle once for all was won

He took the sin of the world with Him to the grave

And left it bound there so men he could save

At Calvary the work of God was done!

The cross was efficient- a tortuous hell

And it performed its task very well

But the signs of conflict and all it had borne

The signs of the hatred, derision and scorn

Are still visible though the cross has decayed

The one that it bore still bears sin and is the Way

For new life and victory for all who'll believe

So leave your sin at calvary and mercy receive

For at Calvary more than Christ was dying

An unseen battle once for all was won

He took the sin of the world with Him to the grave

And left it bound there so men he could save

At Calvary the work of God was done!
