Can you imagine the pain and grief's load

They carried that day on the Emmaus Road

The burden they bore and the peace that they lacked

On the city of promise they had turned their backs

For all of their hopes and all of their dreams

Had been dashed by the death of Messiah it seemed

So what if the grave was empty

So what if the women had seen?

Can you imagine the things they discussed

As a stranger walked up from behind in the dust?

Or their dismay that He's not even heard

Of what troubled them deeply- it seemed so absurd

For when their world crumbled their faith fell apart

The promise had ended with the last beat of His heart

And the reasons they rationalized in their hearts

Couldn't replace what they had at the start.

Can you imagine their shock and surprise

When the stranger said - when will you realize?

The one that you speak of said this would come to pass

that all this would happen from the first to the last

Then He taught them all that the scriptures had said

All the prophecies of the life that he had led

Of the promise fulfilled by a Messiah that bled

And the promise He would then rise from the dead!

Then He showed them all that the prophets had shown

The promises of a promised one

the seed of a woman no man had known

The birth of David's greater Son

A prophet like Moses born in Bethlehem

Born of a virgin true God and yet man

How a voice in the wilderness would prepare His way

And the Spirit of God would rest on Him one Day

Of miraculous healings and then

How He'd enter into His Jerusalem

How messiah would be ultimately betrayed

For thirty pieces of siolver the deal would be made.

For messiah must suffer and pay the great price

All of nature revolted when the lamb was sacrificed

Buried by a rich man just to rise from the dead

They had heard all the words but not heard what was said

For an empty tomb just wasn't enough it seemed

And the scriptre's clear promise- what did it mean?

They couldn't put it together- now not one suspected

He would die only to be resurrected!

Even though He had told them how could it be true

What would it take for belief to break through?

Well it may be the mem'ries of five thousand fed

Or the authority with which he broke the bread

Or perhaps they saw the scars in His hands

All we know is the Spirit made them understand

That the bread that was broken was the promise fulfilled

That all He had spoken had been of God's will

And the tomb anbd the scriptures wwere hollow until

They beheld the risen Lord and all doubts were stilled!

Can you imagine when they realized

When their risen Messiah was recognized

hearts now filled with Joy instead of despair

So they ran to Jerusalem through the night air

For the one they followed was now alive

The promise they'd lived for was now revived

He gave life to the living and the dead made alive

For in Him is the life for which all men strive

And their hearts burned within them

And their hearts burned within them

And their hearts burned within them

And their hearts burned within them
