The promise of Emmanuel

A promise was made in the garden before we were cast out

The hope for a future and a pardon- a light for the darkness of doubt

The promise of a woman's seed planted by God to be born

Who crushed the serpent's head and freed the prisoners who mourn

The promise held true for those who obeyed- for the just who by faith live

The spirit rested on those who believed, and on the lamb who would forgive

The promise held true in the desert- in a pillar of cloud and fire

That led a wandering people to the land of their desire

All these blessings were prophetic, but just a shadow of coming things

For the promise of messiah brought the perfect prophet, priest and king

God will save his people from his wrath- from sin, the grave and Hell

The salvation of the Lord has come- the promise of Emmanuel
