Christians believe the basis for their entire worldview appeared in human history 2000 years ago in the form of Jesus Christ. Christ died for our sins in time and space. The resurrection is an historical event non pareil.

The veracity of the Bible and the promise of a future kingdom ushered in by the return of Christ is more credible than utopian schemes dreamt up by sinful men. Christians hold that the Bible is an historical document and is trustworthy and true when dealing with historical events. History convinces more people than philosophy because it is a narrative of real human endeavor.

Nearly all of history can be summarized in a few landmark events- God's revelation through creation of the Earth, the creation of man, the rebellion of mankind, the revelation of God's nature to the patriarchs and Israel, the crossing of the red Sea, the incarnation in space and time of God in the flesh, the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, His ascension and revelation of Himself through the Church. History will culminate with His return and judgement of the nations followed by the end of time and the eternal state.
The historical Christ and the historical written Word are the two cornerstones of the Christian Faith .

The Christian view of history provides for human agency. God created a true universe with real meaning apart from Himself, not an extension of Himself. His creatures' actions in this temporal sphere have eternal consequences. That universe began when time began, and will end when God brings the curtain down. When a man chooses to do God's will he is joining in on God's redemptive plan for history. Man may bring about present evil consequences, but God will not allow man's sin to thwart his overall direction for history.

The belief that history is a linear progression with a beginning, apex and end is unique to Christianity. Classical and Eastern thought conceived of time as cyclical. The concept of a progressive and purposeful flow of history has formed Western thought and culture.

It is the Christian position that it takes less faith to believe in a purposeful and creative God who is sovereign over history than it does to believe that everything is a result of chance happenings. 1Corinthians 10:1 tells us that we are not to be ignorant of history.

While God is transcendent and timeless, He exists beyond the limits of time in eternity, yet He actually entered into time and space by taking on a human nature in the incarnation. History therefore has a specific overarching purpose. God invested our reality with meaning by entering into it Himself in the incarnation. He validated its purpose in creation and will bring it to a fitting end at the conclusion of time.
